The first oral erectile dysfunction (ED) pill, Levitra, was released yesterday and will be available in some pharmacies beginning this month. The drug is intended to improve blood flow to the penis, but it’s not a magic bullet, according to an analysis of the available data.
The FDA has been warning about the risk of erectile dysfunction, according to a letter released this month from the Food and Drug Administration.
The letter warns that ED is a very serious condition and that the risk increases with age, high blood pressure, smoking, and drinking.
The letter’s authors said that even though Viagra and the other two drugs are approved for ED, there is a “serious and sometimes fatal interaction” with other drugs, which could lead to a dangerous condition called priapism, which can damage the penis.
The FDA also notes that taking a pill that contains sildenafil or similar drugs could cause an erection, and may cause a heart attack or stroke.
Viagra and Levitra are both approved for men with erectile dysfunction, according to the FDA. The FDA recommends that men take about 25 milligrams of sildenafil daily, which can be as high as 100 milligrams and 50 milligrams per day.
Levitra is also sold under a different brand name and is available in a different dosage form. It’s marketed as a “combination of Levitra and Viagra,” but the FDA says that the drug will only be available in the United States at a later date, so it may not be available in all of the states that have its FDA review. Levitra is available in some pharmacies beginning this month and it is available through most pharmacies, although some may only be able to purchase it through online pharmacies. The drug is available as a 50 mg tablet.

The FDA also notes that the use of erectile dysfunction drugs “may be associated with increased risk of death in men taking the drugs” in the first five years of treatment.
The FDA recommends that men who are currently using other drugs to treat erectile dysfunction “may be more at risk for developing the condition,” the letter said. That includes nitrates, which are available in some form of generic form.
“The risk is higher in those who are taking nitrates, and in those who are currently taking them,” Nissen said.
